The best photo gear for the Mangystau Kazakhstan Photo Tour
For this immersive Mangystau Kazakhstan photo tour, it is important to bring the right photography gear so you can capture the region’s dramatic desert landscapes, vast canyons, and star-filled skies at their best.
A camera with manual controls is ideal for high-resolution landscape photography in Mangystau. We recommend bringing a wide-angle lens, such as a 14–24mm or 16–35mm, for sweeping desert vistas, a standard zoom lens like a 24–70mm or 24–120mm for versatile shooting, and a telephoto lens, such as a 70–200mm or longer, to isolate distant peaks, rock formations, and landscape details.
A sturdy tripod is essential for sunrise photography, sunset photography, and astrophotography, especially in Mangystau’s windy conditions.
A drone is also highly recommended for capturing the region’s unique patterns and formations from above. While it is not essential for this photo tour, we suggest bringing one if you have it, ideally a model that performs well in strong wind, such as a DJI Mavic 4 Pro or a similar-weight drone rather than a Mini. At the moment, no license or special permission is required to fly in these remote locations.
We also recommend polarizing filters to improve contrast in Mangystau’s colorful skies, as well as ND or GND filters if you plan to shoot long exposures. Please pack extra batteries, dual memory cards, a remote shutter release, and lens-cleaning kits, since fine desert dust is unavoidable.
This is a rare opportunity to photograph untouched terrain in constantly changing light and weather, so the better prepared your gear, the stronger your images will be.
