Why Choose This April Mangystau Expedition?
A 9-Day Landscape Photography Expedition to Mangystau in Kazakhstan with Isabella Tabacchi and Alex Wides
April is one of the best times to photograph Mangystau, with cooler temperatures, water and reflections in the salt lakes, and the kind of soft spring light that makes the desert landscapes feel even more dramatic.
An April expedition offers a bit more cold but still pleasant photography experience, giving you more dramatic sunrise and sunset sessions, and maybe some flowers in the green steppe. It is a rare opportunity to explore Mangystau in a season when the light, weather, and spring conditions all work together to create strong images.

What Photo Gear to Bring on the Mangystau Kazakhstan Photo Tour
For this Mangystau Kazakhstan photo tour, it is important to bring the right photography gear so you can capture the region’s dramatic desert landscapes, vast canyons, and star-filled skies at their best.
A camera with manual settings is ideal for high-resolution landscape photography in Mangystau. We recommend bringing a wide-angle lens, such as a 14–24mm or 16–35mm, for sweeping desert views, a mid-range lens like a 24–70mm or 24–120mm for versatile shooting, and a telephoto lens, such as a 70–200mm or longer, to isolate distant peaks, rock formations, and details in the landscape.
A sturdy tripod is essential for sunrise photography, sunset photography, and astrophotography, especially in windy conditions. A drone is also highly recommended for capturing the unique patterns, colors, and formations of Mangystau from above. While it is not essential for this photo tour, we suggest bringing a drone if you have one, preferably a model that handles wind well, such as the DJI Mavic 4 Pro or a similar-weight drone rather than a Mini. At the moment, no license or special permission is required to fly in these remote locations.
We also recommend polarizing filters to improve contrast in Mangystau’s colorful skies, as well as ND or GND filters for long exposure photography. Please pack extra batteries, dual memory cards, a remote shutter release, and a lens-cleaning kit, since fine desert dust is unavoidable.
This is a rare opportunity to photograph untouched landscapes in constantly changing light and weather, so the better prepared your gear, the stronger your images will be.
